Pongal Festival

We were happy to be ‘at the right place at the right time’ when we stopped for a night in Kanyakumari.

While taking an evening walk at the beach front, we happened to pass by a semi open place with a big crowd of people, both the locals and tourists. There on the stage were dancers in their beautiful and colourful costumes; their bangles glittered under the spot lights as they danced and moved about skilfully and effortlessly. We decided to join the crowd and ended up enjoying the evening of performance.

The event was held in conjunction with the Pongal Tourist Festival 2010. There, we were invited by the officers of the Tourist Board to attend / witness the Pongal celebration the following morning at Agasteeswaram Village where 201 village ladies would assemble to cook / boil pongal, a mixture of rice, sugar, dhal and milk in clay pots. Pongal is a Tamil festival marking the end of the harvest season.

Always fascinated by the movements, so agile and graceful…
